Sustainability Environmental Initiatives

Basic Policy

MIYAJI ENGINEERING GROUP (MEG) has set environmental preservation as a behavioral standard in its Charter of Corporate Behavior and Code of Conduct. We promote environmentally friendly business activities as well as the disclosure of climate-related financial information.

Environmentally Friendly Initiatives

We work to reduce waste generated at our plants and construction sites
We carry out our business activities with due consideration for recycling and proper disposal, particularly with regard to construction by-products.
In addition, we aim to reduce the environmental impact of all of our business activities, working to conserve resources and energy. We make every effort to protect the global environment and prevent global warming.
As well as new bridge construction projects that contribute to the creation of social infrastructure, we are also actively engaged in bridge preservation, maintenance, and repair projects to address aging infrastructure, which we see as helping to bring about an environmentally conscious society.

Measures to Reduce Our Environmental Burden

【Solar power generation】

As part of our efforts to combat climate change, we are using the site of the Matsumoto Works to operate a solar power plant.
The 7,980 solar panels installed there generate 2,611,000 kWh/year, which is equivalent to the power consumption of 550 general households. This has a CO2 reduction effect of 469,858 kg per year.
We will continue to consider the installation on the rooftops of plants and equipment centers going forward, as we strive to further reduce CO2.

Resource-saving and Energy-saving Initiatives

【Specific activities at plants】

At plants that have already engaged in many resource-saving and energy-saving activities, there are few measures that could drastically reduce environmental burden. It is therefore important to implement measures incrementally in line with equipment updates.
By introducing a digital welding machine that can reduce power consumption by more than 10% compared to conventional models, replacing lighting with LEDs to increase power usage efficiency, and improving the operating efficiency of various facilities, we were able to reduce power consumption by more than 15% year-on-year in FY2022 while maintaining operations.

【Specific activities at equipment centers】

We are considering introducing solar power generation and electric forklifts to reduce the environmental burden of our equipment centers.
Hiroshima Equipment Center, our newest, has been operating as an all-electric facility since 2020.
In addition, Kurihashi Equipment Center, which is undergoing renewal work from FY2023, plans to introduce solar power generation.
Furthermore, we are gradually promoting the introduction of electric forklifts, and the plating treatment of equipment with the aim of reducing the use of organic solvents. We are also working to improve the surrounding environment and workplace environment.

Global Environmental Conservation Initiatives

【Coral conservation activities】

On floating piers that have been subjected to electrolytic protection using the current anode method, we found that coral grows at locations with relatively strong electric fields in the range of 0 to 100 mA/m2. We installed four coral growth shelves with different electric field conditions off the coast of Ishigaki Port. We attached 60 asexual reproductive coral pieces on each shelf, and observed the growth promotion effect for more than 10 years. The results suggest that weak electric fields clearly promote coral growth, and furthermore, weak currents increase temperature tolerance. Using these findings, we will continue our efforts to conserve coral.

Disclosure of Climate-related Financial Information

【MEG Climate Change Countermeasure Policy】

MEG recognizes climate change as one of its most important management issues. We will disclose CO2 equivalent emissions (Scope 1, 2 for FY2021) associated with the Group’s business activities from this fiscal year.
We will continue to deepen the quality and quantity of our disclosures and further advance our efforts to address climate change issues.
We plan to further enhance and upgrade our climate change-related disclosure in the near future. We will make a statement in support of the TCFD recommendations, disclose the Group’s own and indirect emissions (Scope 1, 2, and 3), set reduction targets, and implement specific reduction measures.
As an organizational response, we will revise the Basic Regulations for Compliance and Risk Management to newly add climate change risk to the scope of our compliance and risk management. In addition, management, including the Board of Directors, will become more deeply involved in this area.

【Disclosure items】

This year, we will disclose our own CO2 equivalent emissions associated with the Group’s business activities (for FY2021).
① Scope 1: 572.3 tons
② Scope 2: 2,480.6 tons

【Strengthen and improve governance and risk management systems as an organization】

・“Responding to climate change risk” has been added as an agenda item to be discussed by the Compliance and Risk Management Committee.
・We will share the above matters to be discussed within the management level, including at Board of Directors meetings, with the aim of promoting more active management-level involvement.
